Horse and Equine Fence Needs

With their unique combination of size, speed, intelligence and strong herding instinct, horses can present a fencing challenge.

Strength

Visibility and safety are two important things to consider when choosing a fence for your horse.  The need for horses to see a fence line is important so entanglement doesn’t become an issue.  A wooden top rail (board) will add visibility, as will a white coated wire.  Small, consistent 2” x 4” or 2” x 2” openings on non-climb fences keep small hooves in and protected while keeping predators out.

In the interest of safety for the horse, barbed wire is not recommended.

Spacing

Post spacing is another important aspect to consider, for horse/equine applications we recommend 8 to 12 feet. Spacing  between line wires on your woven wire fence should be 2”.

Height

  • 48” minimum, strongly recommend a board or smooth (electric optional) wire on top for visibility and control.
