For cattle, bison and other bovine confinement, the two top fencing considerations are strength and height.
For the ultimate in containment and strength, choose a Solidlock® high tensile fence. The fixed knot fence design is the strongest and longest lasting fence you can purchase.
Barbed wire, high tensile smooth wire with electric is your next best option. Hinge joint field fences are other common choices for cattle containment. These fences should be built using treated wood posts or a combination of wood and T-posts.
If you need to separate a bull from cows, you will need to use a six-inch vertical wire space woven wire or additional strands of high tensile barbed or smooth wire. Add an electrified wire to the top of the fence for the best containment. This electrified top wire can also be used to power portable divisional fence for rotational grazing.
Post spacing is another important aspect to consider, for cattle/bison applications we recommend 16 to 20 feet. Spacing between line wires on your woven wire fence should be a minimum of six inches for crowded areas or where extra strength is desired, 12 inch is sufficient for pastures.
