Building a Wood H-Brace

Q. I’ve got some thick wooden posts available, and I’d like to use them as corner posts for a fencing project I’m considering. Are wood posts a good choice for bracing a fence?

A. Wood is a great choice for building H-braces for your fencing project, because the strength of your fence comes from the braces. Regardless of if your project utilizes high tensile or low carbon fencing, there will be more than a ton of tension on the corner posts. They must be installed in such a way that they resist this constant tension and keep your fence adequately supported.

An H-brace is an assembly of three posts and bracing wire which creates a strong resistance to the lateral force of the fence. Braces may be single or double, however the width should ALWAYS be 2 ½ times the height of the fence.

In the video below #TheFencePros demonstrate the proper way to build a wood H-brace for your fence. If you decide not to use the wooden posts and go with metal pipe instead, we have a video on building a pipe H-brace. In addition to our videos, we have a knowledge library that contains detailed brace installation guides. Still have bracing questions? Ask #TheFencePros!
